CEBA will be having their "end of summer" varroa workshop at our Oatland Apiary, on September 20th (10:00 am). This workshop is a follow-up to the educational talk provided by Kaley Kirby at our Sept 8th Meeting.
We will be performing a live demonstration using two methods to determine mite counts: (1) Sugar Shake and (2) Alcohol Wash. If you attended the meeting, you may remember Kaley referencing "ghost bees". This will also be demonstrated.
We will also perform two different types of treatments, as discussed from the meeting. Using our bee clubs Varroa Kit, we will perform the vaporization of oxalic crystals to treat a colony. Next, we will demonstrate the same treatment using a Burgess Fogger. Our solution will be water based, not alcohol base, so no chance of "flaming" can take place.
Members will see several short cuts in collecting the bees from the colonies. If you have never measured a 1/2 Cup of LIVE bees, then maybe you need to practice!
